Our Story

Established in 1981, Shelter Home for Children began with a simple yet profound mission, to provide a sanctuary for children who have been silent victims of abuse, neglect, and abandonment. What started as a small initiative has grown into a pillar of hope in the community. For over four decades, we have worked tirelessly to heal trauma and restore childhoods. Our approach is not just about providing a roof, it's about emotional rehabilitation, quality education, and preparing these brave young souls for a bright, independent future.

Our Journey

SHELTER began when seven friends, including James Nayagam, rented a bungalow in Petaling Jaya to house homeless boys found sleeping in cinema corridors. Despite early challenges including an instance where the first residents stole money and ran awayβ€”the group persevered, eventually moving to a permanent location at Jalan Tinggi to accommodate more families and children. The organization expanded its reach by establishing 10 affordable kindergartens in squatter settlements to give underprivileged children an educational foundation, while also venturing into proactive youth work, such as rehabilitating juvenile delinquents in prisons and creating the "DropZone" community center for personal development.

In response to the evolving needs of the community, SHELTER shifted its strategy to focus more deeply on the rising issues of child welfare. Although the organization once operated five different facilities catering to various social needs, it eventually consolidated its resources into three primary homes: Shelter 1, 2, and 3. This streamlining allowed the organization to concentrate its expertise and efforts on a specific mission: providing specialized care and protection for children and teenagers who have been victims of abuse, neglect, and abandonment.
